A checked blouse with an apple branch for a head, spectacles with eyes, a gramophone and bunches of grapes: the label on this rosé looks like a picnic that got slightly out of hand. That's the Hands Off style, a young Spanish brand working with winemakers who intervene as little as possible. This rosé is made for them by Bodegas Gardel, a family winery in Las Mesas, in the province of Cuenca.
Character
Garnacha — better known elsewhere as Grenache — is a Spanish grape that, as a rosé, gives mainly red fruit: strawberry, raspberry, a touch of cherry. At 11% this is a light, fresh rosé, the kind you top up without thinking. Organic and vegan, as stated on the label.
How I serve it
Cold, at 8 to 10 °C, and keep the bottle in a cooler on the table. Rosé that warms up loses exactly what makes it fun.
- At the barbecue: chicken skewers, grilled vegetables, prawn kebabs.
- With a margherita pizza or pasta with tomato and basil.
- With a salade niçoise.
- Simply as an aperitif, with crisps and a little tapenade.
What to do with it
This is the bottle I bring to a garden party: organic, affordable and with a label everyone looks at twice. Drink it young and drink it cold. If you like, put it next to the Hands Off white and red: three colours, three labels, one story.
