Bunnahabhain – Islay single malt whisky with maritime elegance

Bunnahabhain is a single malt Scotch whisky produced on the Isle of Islay, known for its rugged coastline and smoky whiskies. Unlike many other Islay brands, Bunnahabhain is best known for its mostly unpeated, subtle, and elegant profile, often with rich sherry influences, fruity depth, and maritime accents.

The story behind Bunnahabhain

Bunnahabhain Distillery was founded in 1881 near Port Askaig on the north coast of Islay. The name comes from the Gaelic "Bun na h-Abhainne," meaning "mouth of the river"—a reference to the Margadale River near the distillery.

For a long time, Bunnahabhain was primarily known as the source malt for famous blends such as Famous Grouse, Cutty Sark and Black Bottle, but since the 2000s the brand has firmly established its position as a single malt in its own right with a wide, well-regarded range.

Situated on the Sound of Islay, the distillery was only accessible by boat until 1960, contributing to its isolated, unique character.

Why choose Bunnahabhain?

  • Islay single malt whisky with a mild, elegant profile — often unpeated and accessible within the island genre.

  • Rich sherry maturation produces fruity, nutty and spicy aromas.

  • Non-chill-filtered and with no added colour — giving it a rich texture and natural flavour.

  • Known for its smooth, balanced style with subtle maritime accents.

  • Perfect for enthusiasts seeking Islay character without excessive peat smoke.

Bunnahabhain whiskies are known worldwide for their deep layers of flavor that combine fruit, nuts, spices, and savory notes — an excellent choice for both purists and whisky drinkers who appreciate a smooth Islay style.
