The flattest of the five, and therefore the most plate-like. Nine and a half centimetres across and barely two and a half high: this is where one bite sits, not where something is poured.

The glaze is reactive. The colour goes its own way in the kiln and no two dishes come out the same — blue, brown, grey or sea green, with more or less gradation each time. Five side by side on a board look like something a person made, not something off a line.

What you can do with it

• a single canapé, a spoon of tapenade, three olives
• a little flaky salt or pepper beside a plate of meat
• as a saucer under an espresso, while you are at it
