Belazu Rose Harissa is an intensely aromatic paste with a slowly building chilli heat and a subtle floral undertone of real rose petals. The deep smokiness and slightly sweet balance make this one of the most versatile flavourings in your kitchen.

This harissa is inspired by a secret family recipe and was developed in 1995. Since then, it has grown into one of the most recognizable and beloved products in the Belazu range. It is not without reason that it is one of the permanent ingredients of star chef Yotam Ottolenghi, who uses it in countless Middle Eastern dishes.

The name Harissa is derived from the Arabic harasa – literally meaning ‘to crush’ – a direct reference to the preparation: pounding herbs, peppers and spices into a strong, smooth paste. The parallels with the Italian pestare (from which ‘pesto’ comes) are striking.

The possibilities with this rose harissa are endless:

• As a spicy topping for avocado or fried eggs

• Mix with yoghurt to make a delicious marinade for chicken or lamb

• Add a spoonful to your burger mix for extra depth

• Use as a base for an intensely flavoured tomato sauce

• Stir into (vegetarian) stews or pasta dishes

• Or... serve as a dip with flatbread or roasted vegetables

Recipe tip : Try a harissa-yogurt dip: mix a tablespoon of rose harissa with thick Greek yoghurt, a pinch of salt and lemon juice. Delicious with roasted cauliflower!
