The story behind Bontà Lucane

The story of Bontà Lucane begins with Nonna Maria, grandmother of current director Paolo Moliterni. In Matera's oldest neighborhood (Basilicata), she opened a small bakery where she made focaccia and bread for local workers—using just a few simple ingredients like flour, water, salt, and extra virgin olive oil.

When many workers were forced to leave during World War II, Nonna Maria developed a harder, longer-lasting version of the dough: the focaccine cracker. This simple yet tasty innovation grew over the years into a beloved product—and eventually, the brand we know today.

What was once a small bakery is now an internationally renowned producer of savoury Italian snacks, still rooted in Basilicata tradition and with respect for purity and flavour.
